Living the Life
of a Saint

Introduction
A new name symbolizes the taking on of a new nature or the anointing by God for a special purpose. Monks embraced this idea from the earliest times. A monk would not only take the name of a Saint but would also study his life in order to be able to imitate him. You will follow in this time-honored tradition of choosing a new name for Confirmation. You will become a part of the past and in doing so will become a Saint for the future.
Task
As you carry on with the tradition of choosing a new name like the monks of old, your task is to research the life and times of the Saint for whose name you will take at confirmation. Think about your talents, the things in life that you like, and your goals for the future. Many groups and interests have patron Saints. Take time to investigate many Saints before you make your choice. Choose someone whose life you admire. Your task is to learn about the Saint and the period of time in which that person lived so that you can write yourself into history.
Take notes on the Saint you choose. Your notes should include the following:
1.Full name
2.Important dates in the life of the Saint. Include birth and death. If these are unknown, get approximations.
3.Important cities and or countries in the life of the Saint.
4.Background on the life of the Saint.
5.Important events that contributed to the Saint's greatness.
6.Note important facts on the time in history

Now it is time to organize the facts and write your essay. Your essay will be written as though you are not a researcher in the present but as if you are one of your spiritual hero's closest companions. You were there when the special miracles were performed, and during the hard times and struggles. You were also there for the many times of great spiritual learning and faith. Sadly, your dear friend has just passed away. As the companion chosen to keep records for your group, you will write the story of your hero's life. Because you loved and admired your friend, you will include the meaningful events and accomplishments in your friend's life that made him or her a Saint. You will finish your essay by leaving a spiritual message your friend would have wanted you to share with the future.
